Green Age kicks with musical diversity

The diversity of the music spectrum comes alive at the 2007 Newcastle Community Green Festival. From electro and techno to funk and punk, from world music to acoustic and all points in between it may be one of the most diverse musical treats ever assembled in one location.

Funk Network UK, Hooked, Acoustic Circus, Liminal Arts, Focal Music and GemArts are just some of the groups hosting more than 60 musicians, DJ's and entertainers who will be performing this year on four music stages: the Main Stage, Deepark Stage, Lakeside Stage, and Terrace Stage.

What's extra special is that the festival has served as a debut stage for many up and coming musicians says coordinator of the Main Stage, Richard Owen.

“In the past the festival has acted as a launch-pad for a number of now more established artists, and it’s always satisfying to see them go on to greater successes knowing that the Green Festival helped to give them a leg-up.”

Chris Littlewood, the man in charge of the Deerpark Stage agrees: “The music stages at the Festival offer a great opportunity for up and coming artists to showcase themselves to a wide audience who wouldn’t necessarily see them in a normal gig environment, helping to boost their profile and introduce new talent to the city”.

The festival runs from 12 noon to 6 pm on Saturday June 9 and 12 noon to 10 pm on Sunday June 10.

On the fringe of the park, nestled amongst the trees is the Deerpark Stage; local techno heads Hooked (www.clubhooked.com) return to host the dance stage, this time on both days of the festival featuring 100 per cent homegrown artists from the city’s techno and electronica underground and a showcase from local label Testin Out (www.testinout.co.uk).

In previous festivals, the Deerpark Stage ran only one day as a fairly techno and electronica orientated affair. With two fulls days this year, it incorporates some of the region’s dub, hip hop and dubstep DJs, along with local youth group S.M.B. on the Saturday. Some of the live acts and DJs involved this year are: Suibom Serum, Ant Gould, Artwhore, Chris Littlewood, Biologic, Andy Gordon, Mizbee, Dynamix, Gareth Hocking and Flabski.

Towards the centre of the park with the stunning backdrop of the lake and waterfowls the Lakeside Stage is  presented by Liminal Arts showcasing an eclectic mix of bands including Wailing Blues, Future Flamenco and Electro and Ambient Music. This year's Festival is delighted to welcome back Maybe Myrtle Turtle who will be presenting some of their most eccentric and appropriately titled Squackabillyhiphopablues pieces. Visitors to the Dome Stage can also look forward to an upbeat and theatrical show from Electro Flamenco with their stunning Flamenco dancers performing to a fusion of Mediterranean and contemporary urban styles. Bridie Jackson's beautiful and haunting music will stimulate challenge and delight in equal measure. Following the recent release of his latest album and the launch of his own label, Portal records, Algorithm will be playing a live set of the best ambient/electro that the toon has to offer!

The Newcastle Community Green Festival is the UK's biggest free environmental festival which showcases new and evolving practical, sensible and cost-effective lifestyles designed to safeguard the Earth and its inhabitants.

Top Green Tips
About a quarter of the heat lost from the average home is through the roof (TimesOnline - December 13 2006). Insulation of roofs, walls, floors, chimneys, letter boxes, doors and windows can all be cost effective measures for preventing heat loss and locally sourced and natural materials are the most environmentally friendly.
