One World

The One World music stage and world heritage area kick-started events at this year’s Festival with the event’s largest ever selection of top-class multicultural entertainment and workshops. With activities ranging from story telling, music, arts, crafts, dance and traditional customs workshops there was something for everyone!

For the kids, there were world-wide story telling sessions, traditional costume dressing up sessions, origami (Chinese paper folding) classes, music lessons with musical instruments from around the world and henna hand painting workshops.

For the adults, there were sari wearing workshops and dance activities where visitors could try their hand at traditional oriental belly dancing, African dance, Dandian stick dancing as well as modern and classical Indian dance.

If all that wasn’t enough there was a wide range of music reflecting the diverse range of communities, customs and cultures in Tyneside.

Cheers to the following bands who performed for free: Devastasian Live Project, Sahaj ‘Qawwali Esctacy and Bhajan Bliss, Osa Omoragbe, Bollywood Dance, Las Chungas Flamentronikas and Amanzi African Drumming.

And finally a big thank you to the Action Against Racism Fund and New Deal for Communities for funding the area.

Top Green Tips
20% of the UK’s green house gas methane emissions in 2002 came from kitchen, garden and other waste which was rotting inside landfill sites (Defra). This could be prevented if householders composted their kitchen and garden waste instead of binning it.
